Nesting: New Year

Nesting: is a blog about the objects and experiences that create a sense of home. Without home, it is difficult to maintain health, find joy, or to be productive during our workdays. May you enjoy the Nesting series of blogs as much as I enjoy writing them. –Jana

When a new year starts, I often journal to close out the prior year in reflection and to set my course and intentions for the coming year. For 2018, I celebrate: the gardening work that turned my yard (of 18 years) into MY yard; the survival of a step-child who created a very challenging year for herself; the lessons I’ve learned about cheering others on with love and encouragement – without stepping in to prevent the crisis created for themselves; the friends with whom I get to spend time every year; the new friendships that have grown; and my family of origin, with whom I feel a continuous flow of love and support. Nesting celebrations all!

Each new year begins with hopeful possibilities along with the actual lengthening of daylight in our northern hemisphere days. A new year promises that things can be better than, different from, or improved over the prior year. This first week of the new year gives us opportunities to: organize files for the new year; calendar big projects, appointments, and travel plans; and to set goals for ourselves, our families, and our workgroups.

For 2019, I commit to continued weekly blog posts; to continued book club participation; to a successful launch of a new website (stay tuned); and to growing both old and new client relationships for business accomplishments throughout the coming year. Of course, there are personal care, family, and friendship commitments too.

Yesterday, on New Year’s Day, a small group of us gathered to explore “what new thing did we do or learn in 2018”; “what new thing(s) do we intend to pursue in 2019”; and “what help would we like to accomplish the new pursuit.” Our conversations were lively, supportive and encouraging.

What new things will you explore this new year? What help will you need and ask for to achieve your pursuit?
