Nesting: Holiday Weeks

Nesting: is a blog about the objects and experiences that create a sense of home. Without home, it is difficult to maintain health, find joy, or to be productive during our workdays. May you enjoy the Nesting series of blogs as much as I enjoy writing them. –Jana

Holiday weeks in which the recognized holiday falls mid-week sure seem to throw everyone into a bit of a tailspin. First a weekend, then a workday or two, then a day off – or use vacation days to round out a week of time off work – and ultimately a return to work. That is if you are lucky enough to still have a job; or to not be on furlough from a federal government job; or to have not last everything in end-of-year weather disasters.

Holiday weeks must be meant for nesting; for snuggling in at home with family and friends, making memories in your longstanding home or in your temporary home. Make time for watching movies, playing card or board games, learning how those new devices work, and more memory-making. Maybe you are even baking up new recipes or trying out that new pot. Perhaps you are skiing and snowball fighting. Or maybe you’ve gone someplace warmer than where you live and are enjoying sunshine with a new view.

Several friends set new year’s goals during the holiday weeks. Two friend’s holiday photo-card greetings even included goals for 2019 – for themselves and their children. What goals or bucket-list achievements are you aiming for in the new year? Being clear about our goals is a part of nesting because it gives us clarity about our priorities, about where we want to spend time, and upon what we will spend our money.

May your end-of-year holiday weeks be joyous, healthy, restorative, and full of happy memories. May the 2018 into 2019 holiday weeks be a positive foundation for the coming year. And may the time you spend together with family and friends renew your hope that life can be better than ever in the coming year. Whatever your chosen nesting activities during these end-of-year holiday weeks, be sure to rest, relax, and rejuvenate as we prepare to ring in 2019.
