Trophy walls, award plaques, and triumphal shelves fit nesting experiences. Reminders of our accomplishments can make us feel good. Showcasing our accomplishments can help others celebrate with us. And, in the days of ZOOM meetings, our background images, certificates, and awards lend credibility to our presentations and participations.
In my youth, I had a bedroom-located bulletin board with my 4-H ribbons attached. My letter jacket for fencing and marching band was the place I put the 4-H award pins. Here’s the point – in high school, walking around with your accomplishments displayed on your person was an accepted, even encouraged, behavior.
As an adult, I have framed book-jackets in my office to celebrate my first book and my book that has been published in six languages. Seeing theses framed books reminds me of my authorship accomplishments. When virtual meetings happen from my home-office, these, and other professional images, can be seen.
During a recent nest-cleaning, I re-discovered a stainless steel (yes, it needs polishing) award bowl given to me for creative writing in high school. While not currently on display, it serves as a reminder that my creative writing skills might just be as strong as my business writing skills – or that they were once upon a time.
Award winning quilts, needlepoint pieces, paintings and photographs hang on the walls in friends’ homes as a testament to their respective creative pursuits and accomplishments.
Diplomas, award certificates, and commemorative items on shelves or walls wrap us in warmth, hopefully happy memories, and impressive accomplishments. One client showcased diplomas and awards in her ZOOM backdrop so clearly that I was prompted to re-arrange my wall back-drop for greater visibility!
